Case Assignments

Primary Case Assignments

Every case in LegalServer must be assigned to a person, office, and program; the Primary Advocate, Assigned Office, and Assigned Program.

In addition to allowing easy reporting and filtering on logical subsets of cases, this means that every pending and open case will appear on someone's home page if it includes the standard My Assignments list..

Additional Case Assignments

Every case can have multiple additional assignments. Assignments have an Assignment Type, for example, "Pro Bono", "Co-Counsel", "Intern", etc.

Site administrators control the possible assignment types by editing the Assignment Type lookup.

Current Assignments versus Past Assignments

All assignments have a Start Date and an End Date. An assignment is considered Current if the End Date field is empty.

Additional assignments can be 'ended', by adding an End Date, or deleted. The current primary assignment can only be transferred to another user.

Assigning and Reassigning Cases

The initial primary assignment on a case is made at the end of an intake. Additional assignments are typically made using Assign Case link. Pro bono assignments are typically made using the Recommend Pro bono/Other user link.

The assignment history list (shown below) typically appears on case profiles, and each assignment has an Edit link to make changes to it.

Site administrators can provide other means of making assignments, typically using auxiliary forms and the Create Assignment block.

Editing and Deleting Assignments

Existing assignments on a case can be edited and deleted from the Assignment history list shown in the previous section.

Clicking an Edit link allows you to change limited information about an assignment.

For additional assignments you get the option to end or delete them. Ending an assignment keeps the information in the history. Deleting an assignment deletes that information.

Primary assignments cannot be deleted or manually ended. You end an existing primary assignment by transferring it to another user.
