File Manager
We are previewing a replacement for Legal Server’s legacy file "folder tree" view of documents. Site administrators control whether the File Manager is available for users.
This currently works on case profiles and the Admin > Documents page. We will be extending it to work on outreaches and other modules.
Interface and Navigation
The File Manager boasts a responsive design that adapts seamlessly to different screen sizes, including mobile devices and tablets. Key navigation enhancements include:
- Breadcrumb Trail: A clear breadcrumb trail shows the user's current location and navigation history within the file structure. The file’s storage location or path is also clearly displayed.
- Viewing Options: Content can be displayed in both a list view and a grid view.
- Performance: The system implements dynamic loading based on visibility for features like thumbnails, preventing system overload when a folder contains a large number of documents.
Document Management
The feature introduces powerful actions to streamline document handling:
- Uploading: It supports drag-and-drop uploading of files and folders.
- Actions: Users can perform bulk actions on multiple selected items, including moving, deleting, and labeling documents. Individual file management functions like Save As and Rename are also supported.
- Contextual Menus: Context menus offer options such as "edit in Office for the web," "save as new PDF," and "save as new docx".
- Labeling: Support for easier application of labels, including bulk labeling capabilities.
Using the File Manager
- In LS4 environments, the File Manager is initially accessed via a "preview file manager" button located on the case profile or documents tab.
- In LS5 environments, navigating to the documents tab engages the File Manager view directly.
In the unlikely event you want to go back to the folder tree view, you'll have a button to do that:
In current polling, 99.9% of people responding rate the new File Manager "So much better" than the folder tree view. (Gladys hates anything new, so the true number is 100%)
And that's before they discover that you can drag and drop an entire folder of files onto a case now. After seeing that, all respondents said "Just get rid of that Switch to Classic View button. I will never go back. Never."
At an as yet undetermined date, the File Manager will be the only option available and that button will disappear.
Instructions for Site Administrators
The feature is controlled by a document setting (Admin - Document Settings) and can be configured to be enabled by default.
