Playing Video Files in LegalServer
The "View Content" option in the File Manager or on a document profile page can play certain video files directly in your browser with no need to download them.
Note: A file extension of .mp4 alone does not mean the file will be playable.
Video Playback Support Summary
- Supported Format: Standard MP4 container (video/mp4) encoded with H.264 (AVC) video and AAC audio.
- How It Works: LegalServer does not perform server-side transcoding; files are played directly by your browser using HTML5 <video>.
- Unsupported Formats: Containers like MPEG-TS (.ts, video/MP2T), MKV, AVI, or proprietary bodycam formats (even if renamed to .mp4).
Optionally Convert Before Uploading
To play directly in the browser, convert the file to MP4 (H.264 + AAC) before uploading. Here are 3 free alternatives (there are dozens more):
- VLC:
- The Swiss Army knife of video playback and converting.
- Go to Media > Convert / Save > select the file > choose profile "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)".
- HandBrake:
- Select the "Fast 1080p30" or "Web / Fast" preset and check "Web Optimized".
- ffmpeg:
- Command line interface.
- Many GUI programs are just pretty frontends to ffmpeg.
- Fast remux (since streams are already H.264/AAC)
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy -movflags +faststart output.mp4
- Full transcode
ffmpeg -i input.file -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4
